Our Mandate & Functions
CHRC is committed to performing the following key functions to safeguard human rights.
Inquire Suo Moto or on a petition presented by a victim or any person on his behalf, into complaints of human rights violations.
Intervene in any proceeding involving any allegation of violation of human rights pending before a court with the permission of such court.
Visit, under intimation to the state government, any jail or other institution under the control of the state government where persons are detained, to study the living conditions of the inmates and make suggestions for their improvement.
Study the safeguards provided by or under the Constitution or any law for the protection of human rights and suggest measures for their effective implementation.
Promote awareness of human rights literacy among all sections of society through publications, media, seminars, workshops, and campaigns.
Conduct research and promote efforts in the field of human rights.
Encourage the efforts of voluntary organizations and institutions working in the field of human rights.
Promote the rule of law at the national and international levels.
Spread human rights education and encourage public participation in the protection and promotion of human rights.
Undertake and promote studies on treaties and other international instruments on human rights and make suggestions for their effective implementation.
Address factors, including acts of terrorism, that inhibit the enjoyment of human rights and suggest appropriate remedial measures.
Perform such other functions as may be considered necessary for the promotion and protection of human rights.
